Question : -

Factor the trinomial 6x²-5x-6, then find the sum of the factors .

Given : -

  • An equation = 6x² - 5x - 6

To Find : -

  • Sum of their factors .

Concept : -

This question belongs to factorising the trinomial with the help of different methods such as middle term splitting .

Solution : -

\longrightarrow \: 6x {}^(2) - 5x - 6

Now , by splitting the middle term that is - 5 x :

\longrightarrow \: 6x {}^(2) - 9x + 4x - 6

Now , taking 3x and -2 as common :

\longrightarrow \: 3x(2x - 3) + 2(2x - 3)

So ,

\longrightarrow \: ( 3x + 2 ) ( 2x - 3 )

Therefore , factors are ,

  • ( 3x + 2 )

  • ( 2x - 3 )

In the question we have ask to find the sum of their factors . So adding them ,

  • 3x + 2 + 2x - 3

  • 5x - 1

Therefore , 5x - 1 is the sum of the factors .

Answer:

5x - 1

Find Factors:

  • 6x²-5x-6
  • 6x²-9x+4x-6
  • 3x(2x-3)+2(2x-3)
  • (2x-3)(3x+2)

Factors: (2x-3)(3x+2)

Their sum:

  • (2x-3)+(3x+2)
  • 2x + 3x -3 + 2
  • 5x - 1
