Primary succession makes an ecosystem virtually start all over. For example a nuclear explosion wipes out anything and everything in its path. This makes the exosystem start all over and rebuild itself. The secondary succession will only partially make the escosystem restart. For example a forest fire may wipe out some trees however there is still soil avalible for the ecosystem to grow back more easily
