steve has a photo and a rectangular piece of card. the photo is 16cm by 10cm. the card is 30cm by 15cm. steve cuts along the dotted line shown in the diagram below teve throws away the piece of card that is 15 cm by x cm. The piece of card he has left is mathematically similar to the photo. Work out the value of x.

Explanation:

The photo stays the same, the card changes. They must be proportional to each other.

15 by x cm means the 30 is going to be shortened, since it is being cut.

16 / 10 = 1.6

1.6 x 30 = 24

or


(16)/(10) = (x)/(15) \\\\Divide\\\\(16)/(10) *(15)/(x) = (240)/(10x) = 24
