Allied commanders wanted to use American troops as a reserve, but Pershing wanted his soldiers to enter the battle as an army? Why was that so important to him?

Answer:

Pershing was a strong believer that American troops should stay in units independent from other nations of the allied forces. The reasons for this is unclear though there was a clear sense of Patriotism involved and even Nationalism.
