The Cold War was a period (from the end of WWII to the collapse of the USSR) that saw tensions due to disagreements between the USSR and the US. It was called the "Cold" War because there was no direct conflict (though there war countless proxy wars between the US and the USSR that saw small nations erupt in civil war with the US backing one side and the USSR supporting another).
