(-1) 6x + 7y = 3
(6) x + y = 1

-6x - 7y = -3
6x + 6y = 6

-1y = -3

divide both by -1

y = 3

then

6x + 7(3) = 3
6x + 21 = 3
6x = -18

divide both by 6

which equals x = -3
