1.375 inches or 1.4 inches

Explanation:

$(1in)/(40miles) = (x)/(55 miles) \\\\ x(40 miles) = (1in)(55 miles)\\\\ x = (55 miles)/(40 miles) \\\\ x = 1.375 inches$ The miles cancel out as units, leaving you with inches.
