TASHI: And, not a single word to anyone.
AI: Okay, okay. Got it.

Scene 2 Amanda's room
AMANDA: Hey, what's up?
KELLY: Not much. You know, we're sad about you leaving.
AMANDA: It's alright. I will be back next year. It's only a year-long exchange program.
KELLY: Because we love you so, you would come right?
AMANDA: Come where?
KELLY: To the party we are throwing for you! Where else?
AMANDA: (acting uncomfortable) Uh, ok.
KELLY: Promise you won't tell a soul? It just sort of slipped out!
AMANDA: Uh, ok. Sure. I won't.
Scene 3 Ai's room, three days later.

AI: She did? But, she was supposed to leave tomorrow. We had even planned a party for her.
KELLY: Yeah, that's why she left.
AI: But how did she know about it? We didn't tell anyone?
KELLY: I thought everyone knew. I mean, Tashi told me all about it. Didn't she invite Amanda?
AI: I did not know she would do that! (sighs and walks about the room) Looks like you are the only one I can trust.

Answer:

A. To create sympathy for Kelly because of her actions.

Step-by-step explanation:

Dramatic irony is when the audience knows something that the characters in the story don't. In this case, it's that Kelly had heard Tashi and Ai talking about the party without them knowing, even though we, as the audience/readers, know.

You can automatically eliminate choices "C" and "D," since they don't make any sense. That leaves you with choices "A" and "B." There really isn't any suspense in this short story, so that eliminates answer "B."

As the audience learns of Kelly's actions and the consequences, we feel bad for her situation. (Which is answer, "A.")
