A 25-foot long board is cut into two parts. The longer part is one foot more than twice the shorter part. How long is each part?

Here is what we know:

a = longer part

b = shorter part

a + b = 25

2b + 1 = a

Let's rearrange the equation

b = 25 - a

Now we can plug this into the other equation.

2(25 - a) + 1 = a

50 - 2a + 1 = a

51 - 2a = a

51 = 3a

a = 17 ft

To find b, plug a into one of the equations.

17 + b = 25

b = 8 ft
