find the difference from each number to the median.

1,1,2,3,8

Difference: 1,1,0,1,6

add them together

1+1+0+1+6=9

divide by the amount of numbers: 9/5=1.8

The mean is the average of the numbers.
It is easy to calculate: add up all the numbers, then divide by how many numbers there are.
1+1+2+3 +8 = 15
