Did I use this semi-colon correctly? If not what is a good alternative since its already a fairly wordy sentence? Only real answers please, I don't need suggestions to websites or apps that help with this. Anyways, here is the text:

"Whether that be Jack London illustrating the complete indifference that Nature views our lives with or Kate Chopin giving her audience a glance into the oppressive nature of many relationships at that time; These pieces of literature have given our society the outside perspective that many of us need."

So with the two sentences you have if you had used a period the sentences wouldn't have connected as well. And since the first sentence connects to the second by trying to explain how the literature has changed perspective for society it just flows better.

I mean in my opinion the semi colon just works better than a period or comma. It allows a breath to read the second sentence but indicates that the second sentence is what makes the first sentence work.
