URGENT!!! I need help understanding what these quotes mean.

1. "Some historians today express sorrow at the kind of prideful segregation in America, saying that the clinging to ethnicity, in background and custom, has undermined the concept of unity" What does this mean?Do you agree or disagree with the claim of “some historians”?

2. “...the left side of the hyphen — African-American, Mexican-American, Irish American—would overwhelm the right”? What does this mean?

Answer1: It means the rights of people equally no matter what sex/gender,race, religion,or sexuality. And the second question is really your oppinon

Answer2: It's sorta walking in the dark here but I think it means if you give them to much power they will try to overthrow your government or something. Hope it helps (・∀・)
