Yes. This is due to vocal vasoconstriction which will occur in response to local cooling of the tissue. This is caused by a few different pathways.
1. Increased Norepinephrine release onto a2-adrenergic receptors on vascular smooth muscle cell membranes leading to vasoconstriction.
2. Decreased nitric oxide synthase activity in the endothelial cells of the vasculature, preventing local vasodilation.
3. Increased mitochondrial ROS, leading to activation of Rho-kinase and subsequent up-regulation of a2-adrenergic receptors on the vascular smooth muscle membranes. (Although this may only occur in more severe and prolonged local cooling)
To prevent these dark spots in the first place make sure you are on healthy sleep schedule, are well hydrated, avoid excessive screen time, and don’t get old (kidding of course) :)
