Given that x and y are positive integers and (x·2)+x(2^2)+(y·2^3)+(y·2^4)=42, what is the value of xy?

In order to calculate the numbers we will simplify the equation, this is done bellow:

2*x + x(2^2) + (y*2^3) + (y*2^4) = 42

2*x + 4*x + 8*y + 16*y = 42

6*x + 24*y = 42

We can divide the whole equation by 6, so we have:

x + 4*y = 7

The only possible combination of numbers that are positive and integers that will make the equation valid is x = 3 and y = 1. Therefore he value of xy is 3.
