Instead of maintaining his farm, he spends most of his day in his chair, reading his newspaper and drinking, His men were also idle and dishonest, which made has farm worse. On the Saturday of Midsummer's Eve, he gets really drunk at the Red Lion that he doesn't return to the farm (if I remember right)
