We subtract .

9x^3 + 2x^2 - 5x + 4 - (5x^3 - 7x + 4) (Note the the expression for g(x) goes into parentheses as we subtract the WHOLE of it).

= 9x^3 + 2x^2 - 5x + 4 - 5x^3 + 7x - 4 The signs of 7x and 4 change as we distribute the negative over the parentheses).

Now add like terms:

= 4x^3 + 2x^2 + 2x Factoring:

= 2x(2x^2 + x + 1).
