The sales tax is 5%, but you are also paying for 100% of the price in addition the the sales tax, so we can say you are paying for 105% of the price.

Convert 105% to decimal

105/100=1.05

To find the total cost(t), you multiply the cost of the item (x) by the decimal

t=1.05x

To find the total cost of a CD player, substitute the price in for x.

t=1.05x

t=1.05*110

t=115.5

The cost of the CD player with tax is $115.50
