Slaves faced many problems while on the plantations. For instance, did you know that slaves were usually only given about 3 to 4 pounds of meat per week?

1) One terrible condition was the food. Most slaves did not have any control over what they ate, just relying on what their masters brought them. So, if the master forgot, or decided to punish them, they were at his or her mercy.

2) Slaves had their rights taken away. They had to work 12 hours a day, 6 hours a week. Now, a normal job would work about 40 hours a week. Imagine 72, almost twice that.

3) Slaves were regularly beat for making mistakes, or doing something that for some reason didn’t please their masters. Being beaten is most definitely a terrible condition slaves had to face.

Life on the fields meant working sunup to sundown six days a week and having food sometimes not suitable for an animal to eat. Plantation slaves lived in small shacks with a dirt floor and little or no furniture. Life on large plantations with a cruel overseer was oftentimes the worst.
