Lindsay is going out for a bike ride. She loves to ride along the Wabash river. Lindsay weighs approximately 70 kg, and her very pink bicycle weighs 4 kg. The total weight is supported equally by the two wheels. The bicycle tires are 0.018 m wide, and have been carefully inflated to a total gauge pressure of 7.95 x 105 Pa. Determine how much of each tire (i.e., the length) is in contact with the ground at any time.

Answer:

the length = 2.5 cm

Step-by-step explanation:

The total force on 2 wheel = (70×4)×9.8

= 725.2 N

Force on a wheel =
(725.2)/(2) N

= 362.6 N

P = (F)/(A)\\\\(7.95*10^5 \ Pa) = (362.6)/(A)\\\\A = (372.6)/(7.95*10^5)\\\\A = 4.56*10^(-4) m^2

Area A = L × d

L = (A)/(d)\\\\L = (4.56*10^(-4))/(0.018)\\\\L = 0.0253 \ m\\\\L = 2.5 \ cm
