2. The length of a rectangle is 4 centimeters less than twice its width. The perimeter

of the rectangle is 34 cm. What are the dimensions of the rectangle?

Call the length l , the width w and the perimeter P ; you get:

l = 2 w − 4

P = 2 l + 2 w

Where P = 34 c m

so, substitute the first into the second for l :

34 = 2 ( 2 w − 4 ) + 2 w

34 = 4 w − 8 + 2 w

6 w = 42

w = 42 /6 = 7 c m

use this into the first equation:

l = 2 ⋅ 7 − 4 = 14 − 4 = 10 c m
