How did Napoleon make the church both HAPPY with his reforms and ANGRY at his actions at

the coronation ceremony?

On one side, Napoleon signed a treaty, known as Concordat in 1801, which re-established good relations with the Catholic church. But, then a couple of years later in 1804, during the coronation he didn't allowed Pope to put a crown on his head. He did it alone, thus proving that he is above his authority.

During the French Revolution, Church lost its influence in France, and even most of its belongings. Napoleon knew that he will need the support of the Church and that is why he signed the Concordat. Still, when in 1804 Napoleon was crowned, he took the crown from the hands of Pope Pius VII and put it on his head. He wanted to show that he is even greater than the Catholic church.
