The length of a rectangle is 6 cm longer than its width. The perimeter of the

rectangle (the distance around all four sides) is 32 cm. In the space below, draw
a diagram of the rectangle, then write and solve an equation that will enable you
to determine the length and width of the rectangle. I need help!!!

Answer:

Length = 11 cm; width = 5 cm.

Explanation:

Let the width = w

The length is 6 cm longer than the width, so the length is w + 6

length = w + 6

| | width = w

+------------------------+

There are two lengths and two widths. The perimeter is the sum of the 2 lengths and 2 widths.

perimeter = w + 6 + w + 6 + w + w

The perimeter equals 32 m.

The equation is:

w + 6 + w + 6 + w + w = 32

Combine like terms on the left side.

4w + 12 = 32

Subtract 12 from both sides.

4w = 20

Divide both sides by 4.

w = 5

The width is 5 cm.

The length is 6 cm longer than the width.

w + 6 = 5 + 6 = 11

The length is 11 cm.

Answer: Length = 11 cm; width = 5 cm.
