Answer:

1866: The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was founded.

1954: The Humane Society of the United States was founded.

1958: The Federal Humane Slaughter Act was passed.

1963: The National Institutes of Health developed The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. It became the first set of guidelines for the care and use of lab animals.

1966: Congress passed the Animal Welfare Act (AWA). This act stops animal dealers from stealing pets and selling them to research facilities.

1985: Congress amended the AWA. The amendment required researchers to use experimental procedures that minimized pain and distress in animals. Researchers had to use appropriate anesthesia, analgesics, and euthanasia. Revisions of the AWA also required researchers to ensure that dogs got exercise and to look after the psychological well-being of primates.
