The whole play centers around abandonment. Tom’s and Laura’s dad abandoned them, Tom abandons his mother and sister, and in a way Jim abandons Laura as well. Tom’s dad abandoning them plays a huge role in the way Amanda treats Tom. She is constantly nagging at him because she is worried, he will turn out like his father and abandon them as well. This causes a lot of tension between the two throughout the play. It helps drive the plot forward with their bickering. In addition, it plays into Tom’s need for adventure. He takes after his father and therefore dreams of leaving his family behind to travel. Due his mother’s worries that one day he might actually do it his mother persuades him to bring a gentleman caller for his sister in the hopes that if he does abandons them, then they will be taking care of by the suiter. The gentleman caller he brings is Jim. Jim didn’t know the true intentions behind being asked for dinner. Therefore, he didn’t feel the need to disclose the fact that he is engaged. So, throughout the night, Amanda tries to get Laura to talk to Jim and she only succeeds when dinner is over and tom and her go to the kitchen to wash dishes, which leaves Jim and Laura alone to talk. Jim sweet talks Laura and makes her feel confident and hopeful and he kisses her. Then drops the bombshell of the engagement on her. Then quickly leaves. He practically played with her feelings before smashing them. He abandons her with her crushed hopes.
