Factor the 40 using a factor tree, you are looking for sets of two, your factors are 2,2,25, you have 2 twos you bring 2 of your twos out and multiply it by 1/2 and you get one and 2 and 5 underneath the radical witch mutiplies to be 10

Explanation:

find the square root of 40 and multiply it by 1/2. you would get 3.16, the same as square root of 10
