Sound is the name of the term that describes mechanical waves. These mechanical waves are produced through vibration. Then, it uses particle to particle interaction to pass on the effect of the original vibration. This is where the concept of ‘Sound needs matter to travel ‘ comes into action, because these particles are only present in what they call ‘matter’. The effect of vibration, is then, carried on from one particle to another, to another and so on till it ultimately reaches the receiver.

Hope this helps.

Sound is a kind of longitudinal (and mechmaical too) wave i.e the medium to transfer energy from one point to another though vibrations.

It is produced with the production of vibrations.
