Allam just finished a great meal at a restaurant in Wisconsin. The sales tax in Wisconsin is 5% and it is customary to leave a tip of 15% for the server. The tip amount is calculated on the price of the meal before the tax is applied. (Sales tax is not calculated on tips.)

If Allam ordered a $15 meal, how much money will he have to pay with tax and tip?

First you'll wanna find the amount of tax. To do so, you'll need to multiply the price of Allam's meal by the amount of tax in the state.

Divide 5% by 100 to turn it into a decimal. Then multiply it by 15.

5% ⇒ 0.05

15 × 0.05 = 0.75

The tax is $0.75. Now find the 15% tip by using the same method.

15% ⇒ 0.15

15 × 0.15 = 2.25

The tip is $2.25. Now add the three amounts together to find the total price of Allam's meal.

15 + 2.25 + 0.15 = 17.40

Answer:

Allam will have to pay $17.40 for his meal.
