Why is it important to define what a volcano is before discussing how many active volcanoes exist

It is important to define what is a volcano simply because some people do not have a solid understanding of the subject, and think they know what they are talking about. And when it comes to light that they, in fact, DON'T know what they are talking about, they get defensive or hurt when they are mocked and ridiculed for supposedly being "knowledgeable" about it. How, you ask? simple:

For example; say a friend and I were debating volcano sites/which ones were active. if he/she or I did not clearly understand what a volcano was, there would be confusion as to what the other person meant. (such as he/she showing me a picture of a "volcano" that is in reality a normal mountain, or vice versa.) it is important to understand what a volcano is before discussing/debating about them...because if you don't? you can AND will be mocked for your nonexistent "knowledge" on them.
