It is a Simile, similes are a comparison using Like or as. EX: ( My teeth are as bright as the sun)

Answer:

This can mean two things. Deep as in the death of the river, so comparing one's soul to how deep a river is. The second option is how deep, or how far in the river reaches through the land. I still believe the first option is the best for you.
