X = 6

Y = 2

you have to do the problem opposite so i would be 19-1 which would equal 18 and 18 divided by 3 equals 6

Answer:

x = 6

y = 2

Explanation:

You are solving for both the value of the variable x & y.

First, solve for x:

3x + 1 = 19

Isolate the variable, x. Note the equal sign, what you do to one side, you do to the other. Do the opposite of PEMDAS.

PEMDAS =

Parenthesis

Exponents (& roots)

Multiplication

Division

Addition

Subtraction

First, subtract 1 from both sides:

3x + 1 (-1) = 19 (-1)

3x = 19 - 1

3x = 18

Next, divide 3 from both sides:

(3x)/3 = (18)/3

x = 18/3

x = 6

Next, plug in 6 for x in one of the equations given:

x + y = 8

6 + y = 8

Isolate the variable, y. Subtract 6 from both sides:

6 (-6) + y = 8 (-6)

y = 8 - 6

y = 2

x = 6, y = 2 is your answer.
