You need to find the area of each of part of the rug. I would solve it by finding the area of the quadrant and then the area of the two semicircles and add them together.

The Quadrant


(1)/(4) *42^(2) *\pi = 1385.44

The Two Semicircles add up to one total circle so you solve for a full circle.


d=2r \\ 42=2r\\ r=21\\ 21^(2) * \pi
about 1385.44

Then you add the two parts you solved for together

1385.44 + 1385.44 = 2770.88 or 2770.9 in^2
