Steps to solve:

f(x) = |x| + 1; x = -3

~Substitute

f(-3) = |-3| + 1

When you take the absolute value of a number it changes it to a positive number regarding it sign.

~Take the absolute value of -3

f(-3) = 3 + 1

~Simplify

f(-3) = 4

Best of Luck!
