The difference of two numbers is 62, and the sum of twice the larger and three times the smaller is 304. Find the two numbers.

The numbers are 40 and 22

Explanation:

Let x and y be the two numbers; let x be the smaller number

x+y = 62

x = y-18

x+y = 62 becomes:

y-18+y = 62

2y-18=62

2y=80

y=40 (larger number)

x= y-18 = 40-18 = 22

Thus making the answers 40 and 22.
