One is d = √[ (x2 - x1)^2 + (y2 - y1)^2 ].

x1 and x2 are the two given x values, which in this case are 1 and 4.

Then we have: d = √[ (4 - 1)^2 + (-1 - 3)^2 ]

or d = √[ (3)^2 + (-4)^2 ]

or d = √(9 + 16) = 5

√(1-4)²+(3+1)²

√(9+16)

√25=5
