Explanation:

First find the area of the square: 12*12 = 144 in^2

next find the area of 1 circle, im assuming the circles are tangent to the sides of the square and to each other, so each circle has a radius of 12/4 or 3in, the area of each circle is then pi*3^2 or 27 in^2

the total area of the 4 circles is then 27*4 = 108in^2

144-108=36in^2
