Question:- Use the Pythagorean Theorem to find out if these are right triangles.
Justify your answers.
a)3cm 4cm 5cm
b)6.4m 5.6m 2.5m
c) 9.6km 12.8km 16.0 km
answer
before we begin the formula of pythagoras thereom is
hypotenuse²= base²+altitude²
a) 3cm,4cm,5cm
in this the hypotenuse is 5cm because in this set the larger number will always be the hypotenuse
you can take the base and altitude the way you like but hypotenuse can taken by selecting the largest number from the set given to you
by applying the formula
hypotenuse = 5cm
base = 3cm
altitude = 4cm
hypotenuse²= base²+altitude²
(5)²=(3)²+(4)²
25=9+16
25=25
∴ It is a right traingle
b) 6.4m, 5.6m,2.5m
hypotenuse= 6.4m
base= 5.6m
altitude = 2.5m
hypotenuse²= base²+altitude²
(6.4)²=(5.6)²+(2.5)²
40.96= 31.36+6.25
40.96= 37.61
∴ It does not form a right traingle
c) 9.6km, 12.8km,16.0km
hypotenuse= 16.0km
base=12.8km
altitude=9.6km
hypotenuse²= base²+altitude²
(16.0)²= (12.8)²+ (9.6)²
256= 163.84+92.16
256=256
∴ it forms a right traingle
