Jaime is wanting to go on a cruise. A 3rd class ticket costs $50.99. A 2nd class ticket costs $12.39 less than 3rd class. A 1st class ticket costs 2x as much as 2nd and 3rd classes combined. How much is 1st class costing? Which is a better option for Jamie?

Answer:

$179.18 ; Second class ticket

Explanation:

The first step you want to do is set up the problem.

3rd) 50.99

2nd) 50.99-12.39= x

1st) 2(x+50.99)= y

From there, you subtract 50.99-12.39, which will give you 38.60. That is the cost of the 2nd class ticket.

Plug in the numbers into the final formula:

2(38.60+50.99)= 179.18.

That is the answer for the first question.

This leaves you with the third class ticket costing, $50.99, the second class ticket costing $38.60, and the first class ticket costing $179.18. The better option is the second class ticket.
