Two large parallel metal plates are 1.5 cm apart and have charges of equal magnitudes but opposite signs on their facing sur- faces. Take the potential of the negative plate to be zero. If the potential halfway between the plates is then ????5.0 V, what is the electric field in the region between the plates?

Answer: The electric field in the region between the plates is 666.67 V/m

Step-by-step explanation:

The electric field can be calculated using the formula

V = Ed OR

E = V / d

Where E is the magnitude of the electric field between the metal plates and

V is the potential difference between the metal plates,

and d is the separation between the metal plates

From the question, the potential halfway between the plates is 5.0 V. At this point, d will be

1.5cm ÷ 2 = 0.015m ÷ 2

= 0.0075m

Now, to calculate the the electric field in the region between the plates, we will use the formula,

E = V / d

Therefore,

E = 5.0V / 0.0075m

E = 666.67 V/m

Hence,

The electric field in the region between the plates is 666.67 V/m
