During this time period (roughly 1950s-1970s), many new countries achieved independence. This was particularly the case in the African continent, which had long been governed by European powers.
When independence took place, many of these countries had not had any experience with self-government. Moreover, they were also not used to cooperating with other nations. In order to remedy some of these problems, multilateral organizations were established. These organizations encouraged cooperating between different countries. They also tried to solve some of the problems that were created by the colonial powers. These organizations also gave more presence to the new countries in the international arena.
