The smaller number is 18.

Explanation:

Given,

Sum of two numbers = 100

The sum of 8 and the larger number is equal to 5 times the smaller number.

To find the smaller number.

Let,

Larger number is x and smaller number is y.

According to the problem,

x+y =100 ----- eq 1

8+x = 5y ------ eq 2

Now,

Putting the value x = 100 - y from eq 1 in eq 2 we get,

8+100-y = 5y

or, 6y = 108

or, y = 18

Hence,

The smaller number is 18.
