How are dna sequences used to analyze relationships

In each sequence there is a codon, a set of three letters such as AUG. Each codon codes for an amino acid. The codon AUG would code for Methionine, which is the start codon. We can compare condons to show how we are related. If we have some of the same ones, we might be related.
