x = 5 ; y =1

Explanation:

-3x - 1y = -16 ----------(i)

2x + 1 y= 11 ---------(ii) {add (i) and (ii), +1y and -1y will be eliminated}

-x = -5

divide both side by -1


(-x)/(-1)=(-5)/(-1)

x = 5

Plug in x = 5 in (i)

-3*5 - 1y = -16

-15 - y = -16

-y = -16 + 15

-y = -1

divide both side by (-1)


(-y)/(-1)=(-1)/(-1)\\y = 1
