A switch in an electric circuit acts like... well a switch. This simple diagram that I attached here shows a simple switch. If the switch is not connected or is open, the light bulb won't light up, if the switch is connected or is closed, the light bulb will light up. It's somewhat like a conduit for electricity. In simple terms, If the switch is not connected, electricity won't go through therefore the bulb cannot light up, and the opposite if it is connected.
