(x + 2)^2 + (x)^2 = 100

2x^2 + 4x + 4 = 100

2x^2 + 4x - 96 = 0

Using quadratics, sorry, there was no other way, we get:

x = 6 or x = -8.

Check:

6 + 2 = 8^2 = 64

6^2 = 36

64 + 36 = 100 = 10.

-8 works as well.

Therefore, x = 6, x = -8 are correct.
