Given:

a) Area = 121 ft²

b) Area = 81 yd²

To find:

The side length of each square

Solution:

a) Area = 121 ft²

Area of the square = s²

⇒ s² = 121

Taking square root on both sides.

\Rightarrow √(s^2) = √( 121)

\Rightarrow √(s^2) = √( 11^2)

Square root and squares get canceled.

s = 11

The length of each side of the square is 11 ft.

b) Area = 81 yd²

Area of the square = s²

⇒ s² = 81

Taking square root on both sides.

\Rightarrow √(s^2) = √( 81)

\Rightarrow √(s^2) = √( 9^2)

Square root and squares get canceled.

s = 9

The length of each side of the square is 9 yd.
