absolute value equations you have to make two problems and solve them:

first problem : x-12 =4 add 12 to both sides to get x by itself

so x = 12+4 so x is 16

second problem: x-12 = -4 add 12 to both sides to get x by itself

x = -4 + 12 so x is 8
