Explain why applied force is plotted on the vertical axis of the graph even though it is the independent variable in this investigation.

Force is an independent variable. Hooke's law states that the force required to stretch or compress a spring by a certain distance is proportional to that distance, which applies in the spring. When changing the force, you apply the displacement change. The greater the displacement, the more the spring contracts. The slope of the line tangent to the graph gives the spring constant. is what gets the spring's potential energy. multiplying by F * x to gets the work done
