Answer: the prices of the gifts are $6.4 and $19.2

Explanation:

Let x represent the price of the cheaper gift.

Let y represent the price of the costlier gift.

The price of one gift was 3 times the cost of the other. It means that the price of the costlier gift is expressed as

y = 3x

If both gifts cost $25.60 altogether, it means that

x + y = 25.60- - - - - - - -- - -1

Substituting y = 3x into equation 1, it becomes

x + 3x = 25.6

4x = 25.6

x = 25.6/4

x = $6.4

y = 3x = 3 × 6.4

y = $19.2
