x = -6

Explanation:

14 - ( x + 5) = 3(x + 9) + 6

Open the first bracket with -

14 - x - 5 = 3(x + 9) + 6

Open the second bracket with 3

14 - x - 5 = 3x + 27 + 6

Collect the like terms

14 - 5 - 6 - 27 = 3x + x

-24 = 4x

Divide both sides by 4

-24/4 = 4x/4

-6 = x

x = -6
