let x be the number:

4 times a number = 4x

Then 3 more than 4x:

=4x+3

Twice the number = 2x

Then 8 less than twice the number:

=2x-9

Write the equation:

4x+3=2x-9

Subratact 2x form both sides:

2x+3= -9

Subtract 3 form both sides:

2x = -12

Divide both side by 2:

x = -6

Next, check your answer:

4x + 3 = 2x - 9

Substitute -6 for x:

4(-6) + 3 = 2(-6) - 9

Mulitiply:

-24 + 3 = -12 - 9

Add:

-21 = -21

And now you know you answer is -6!

Hope this helps! :)
